What is the T'aekkyon ?
Is it dance or martial art ?
This is the question many people ask on first seeing T'aekkyon.
This stems from the fact that T'aekkyon is based on rhythmical 3-step foot movements combined with hand gestures that are big and smooth.
The forms that flow like water to make fluid-like links between the movements, which are aimed at defending oneself against an opponent's attacks while overpowering them, bring to mind the slow and elegant movements of traditional Korean dances. Although not as widely known as other traditions, T'aekkyon is a native Korean martial art with a character all its own.

It is not discovered when "Taekkyon" is started, but the mural paintings founded in ancient tombs clearly show that it was already practiced as a fighting technique since the Three-Kingdoms period, (57 B.C. - A.D. 668), and the records from various history books tell Korean people enjoyed "Taekkyon" in National Holidays such as Dano, Chusok.

Taekkyon has been popularized because of the subjects for the military service examination for the royal army.

Taekkyon had eagerly performed till the end of Joseon Dynasty, however, as the Japanese Empire annexed Korea, it was disappeared without a trace because of the prohibition measures, and after that, Taekkyon had been barely surviving.
Today, it is the nationwide trend that Koreans' making effort to initiate into Taekkyon as a National Sports and activating it again, Many people think that Taekkyon is the groundings of today's Taekwondo, or Taekkyon and Taekwondo are similar martial, but those are completely different kinds.

First, the movements of Taekwondo are linear and straight with clear beginnings and endings, whereas T'aekkyons movements are more circular, rhythmical and delicate.
In its softness lies the swiftness of a cat that is always ready to attack its opponent's weaknesses. The palms of the hands and hand holds are used only to push one's opponent. The main method of attack is smooth elaborate foot movements. T'aekkyon is focused on a spiritual journey. That is why in T'aekkyon, courtesy, or ye, between teachers and students, experts and beginners is regarded as more important than becoming a champion.

Furthermore, whereas in most martial arts, the last movement involves cutting the breadth of one's opponent, T'aekkyon stops at making the opponent powerless to attack. The Koguryo warriors did not kill the game they hunted. And therein lies the corespirit of T'aekkyon.
